Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare said an estimated 55,000 people had their information exposed after an unauthorized party gained access to its systems through a third-party vendor.
HCA identified suspicious activity involving certain IT systems on Aug. 12, according to an Oct. 29 public notice. The investigation found that an unauthorized party gained access that same day and copied files containing personal information. HCA said it secured the systems, brought in outside cybersecurity experts and notified law enforcement.
The incident affected individuals “spread across our U.S. facilities” and involved nonfinancial personal information and protected health information, an HCA spokesperson told Becker’s.
The breach affected two groups, according to notice letters filed with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. Patients’ files contained information they provided when they received care at HCA-affiliated facilities or physician offices. Medical residents’ HR files included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, contact information and, where applicable, immigration information.
HCA said it has no indication that the information has been published, further disclosed or used for identity theft. The health system began mailing notification letters Nov. 2 and is offering two years of free credit and identity monitoring through IDX. The spokesperson said HCA published the public notice to reach people it could not notify individually.
The incident is separate from HCA’s 2023 data breach, which affected about 11 million patients. HCA reached a settlement in that case, which a federal court approved in October 2025.
