4 largest healthcare data breaches of 2023

In 2023, health systems in Tennessee, California and Florida reported breaches affecting more than 1 million patients.

Here are the four largest healthcare provider data breaches of the year, according to the HIPAA Journal:

  1. In August, Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare notified 11.27 million patients affected in a data breach. The information was stolen from an external storage location.
  2. In February, San Bernardino, Calif.-based Regal Medical Group reported a data breach that compromised the health information of 3.3 million patients. The health system dealt with 11 lawsuits in the wake of the breach. 
  3. In July, Tampa General Hospital reported a breach affecting 2.4 million patients.
  4. In March, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a breach affecting about 1 million patients. Ransomware gang Clop claimed responsibility for the attack.
