Under the act (H.B. 7304), which went into effect Oct. 1, cybercriminals who use ransomware may face up to three years in prison, a fine of $3,500 or both.
Previously, computer extortion was prosecuted under state statutes related to computer crimes and the penalties associated with those crimes.
