CIO leadership is moving beyond technology to office design, culture

CIOs are taking on a wider range of responsibilities since the start of the pandemic, according to a May 12 article by The Wall Street Journal.

IT leaders are expected to develop more consumer-facing technologies for employees and patients. Americans have accelerated their embrace of digital commerce. That means that CIOs will need to bring easy-to-use technology into the workplace for both employees and patients.

They are also expected to establish hybrid work for some portion of the workforce and address the associated challenges that come with it.

Tech chiefs are designing the future of the organization, said Vipin Gupta, CIO of Toyota Financial Services, at a virtual summit hosted by Cambridge, Mass.-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"The question at the leadership table is not about what should become digital, [but] what should remain physical only," Mr. Gupta said.
