Dr. Pinkerton previously headed up Palo Alto, Calif.-based A9, which manages text and visual search features for parent company Seattle-based Amazon.

In his new role, Dr. Pinkerton will help recruit an engineering team for CZI. He told Recode he plans to recruit everyone from mobile app developers to machine learning scientists for the team, which could increase to a “couple hundred people” in the coming years.

Dr. Pinkerton’s initial responsibility will likely involve CZI’s first scientific project: the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a San Francisco-based medical research facility.

“The time horizon here is unlike the typical time horizon. Mark and Priscilla are looking out 50 and 100 years. If you look out that far, you can imagine stuff you’ll want to build on your own that you’ll need in 10 years or 20 years,” Dr. Pinkerton said, according to the report. “It’s super exciting.”

Mr. Zuckerberg also shared the news in a recent Facebook post.
