Cerner testing open specification interoperability standards in EHR

Cerner has integrated a new set of interoperability standards in its Millennium EHR, which clients are beginning to test.

The standard, FHIR, was developed by healthcare standards organization Health Level Seven International. FHIR stands for "Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources" and allows third party developers to use another open platform — in this case Cerner's EHR platform — to create apps that work directly within the platform's workflows.

SMART on FHIR is a set of open specifications, which developers can use to integrate apps with EHRs, patient portals, health information exchange and other IT systems. Cerner clients will be testing SMART on FHIR apps in the EHR.

"The development of SMART on FHIR apps within Cerner Millennium is comparable to smartphones replacing pagers," said Brennan Lehman, CIO at Mosaic Life Care, a healthcare system based in St. Joseph, Mo. "For years, we've struggled with complex interfaces, faxing and scanning to piece together the patient story. From the patient's perspective, care isn't limited to the four walls of the hospital. FHIR enabled apps seamlessly integrated with Cerner Millennium create the platform to solve the puzzle."
