athenahealth to incorporate Evalon payment security technology into platform

Cloud-based EHR provider athenahealth is upgrading its payment security technology by integrating Evalon's security solutions into its offerings.

Evalon, a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp, will provide athenahealth with EMV chip technology, encryption and tokenization at the point of sale for providers using athenahealth's platform.

EMV chip technology is the chip embedded in credit cards that helps enhance fraud protection. The encryption services will protect cardholder data from the time a card is swiped to when it reaches Elavon's data centers for processing. Tokenization refers to a random sequence of numbers that returns to the point of sale so actual card numbers are not stored within the payment system.

"As the credit card industry adopts new technologies, athenahealth is proud to work with Elavon to continue meeting the most current standards," said Todd Haedrich, vice president of athenahealth. "Integrating the latest credit card payment processing technologies into athenaNet will help athenahealth providers feel confident when collecting cardholder payments for their services."
