Athenahealth has introduced new AI-enabled interoperability capabilities for its athenaOne platform.

The upgrades are designed to move the ambulatory care industry beyond compliance-based data sharing toward “intelligent interoperability,” which surfaces relevant clinical insights in real time at the point of care, according to an Aug. 14 news release.

Among the capabilities already in use are next-generation Document Services, which uses AI to read and classify more than a billion faxed pages annually and extract discrete data elements for reporting; and ChartSync, which automatically processes 94% of incoming medication data from outside sources and reconciles duplicates without manual review.

Athenahealth is also piloting a Model Context Protocol server to standardize communication between AI models and athenaOne, with the goal of integrating insights from disparate data sources directly into clinician workflows. Additional features in alpha testing include Intelligent Summaries, which condense diverse patient data, and Chart Assist, a generative AI tool to answer clinical questions and prepare visit summaries.

The company said these updates are part of its multimonth rollout of an AI-native athenaOne experience intended to streamline administrative work, support clinical decision-making and strengthen care coordination.
