Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health is expanding its use of artificial intelligence and digital health tools, reporting that more than 6,000 clinicians have used ambient AI to draft more than 5 million clinical notes.
The health system detailed its progress in an Oct. 21 news release highlighting several digital initiatives and its recognition in the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives’ 2026 Digital Health Most Wired program.
Sutter earned level 9 designations across acute, ambulatory, and long-term and post-acute care.
Here are six digital initiatives the health system highlighted:
- Ambient AI: As of June, more than 6,000 clinicians had used Abridge to draft over 5 million clinical notes, reducing documentation time by as much as 30%. In home health, average start-of-care documentation time declined from 97 minutes to 55 minutes.
- AI-powered patient assistance: Sutter launched its AI assistant, Emmie, systemwide in May to help patients navigate its portal, understand test results and access health information. Nearly 158,000 patients had used the tool as of September.
- Clinical AI: Sutter deployed 10 Aidoc solutions across its system to support radiology and stroke care workflows. As of August, the technology had analyzed more than 583,000 studies and flagged over 43,000 cases for clinician review.
- Nursing documentation: Sutter’s Nursing FOCUS initiative has eliminated approximately 400,000 EHR clicks daily, with the health system projecting annual savings of about 80,000 nursing documentation hours.
- Hospital capacity: A three-hospital pilot of Sutter’s centralized capacity management center reduced excess days above expected length of stay by 27% and increased transfers and direct admissions by 29%. The program uses real-time dashboards integrated with Epic.
- Remote patient monitoring: More than 14,000 patients were enrolled in Sutter Sync as of September. The health system reported that 90% of participating patients with stage 2 hypertension achieved blood pressure control within six months.
“We’re developing workflows, safeguards and digital capabilities that help technology work consistently for patients and care teams, no matter where they are,” Laura Wilt, executive vice president and chief digital officer at Sutter Health, said in the news release.
