MaineHealth defended its use of a Palantir Technologies product, saying the tool helps patients overturn improper insurance claim denials, a day ahead of a July 23 rally planned by the union representing nurses at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland.
The Maine State Nurses Association, part of National Nurses United, is holding the rally at Western Promenade in Portland to demand MaineHealth cancel its Palantir contract, citing the company’s ties to immigration enforcement, according to the union’s July 21 press release.
MaineHealth, in a news release sent to Becker’s, said prior authorization requirements and claim denials have grown significantly in recent years, delaying care and straining patients and clinicians. The health system said it works with Palantir to identify patterns in denials and compare them against insurers’ own policies, which allows MaineHealth to challenge inappropriate denials more quickly on patients’ behalf.
The tool has helped overturn inappropriate coverage denials for thousands of patients seeking medically necessary care, MaineHealth said. Palantir’s role is limited to that function, is not involved in clinical decisions, and does not give the company ownership or control of MaineHealth data, according to the health system. All data is handled in accordance with federal privacy law, including HIPAA, and remains under MaineHealth’s oversight and control, the statement said.
This defense comes as other health systems face similar scrutiny over Palantir contracts.
NYC Health + Hospitals is set to end its $4 million Palantir agreement in October, after CEO Mitchell Katz, MD, told the New York City Council in March that the deal, used to improve Medicaid billing efficiency, would not be renewed. Dr. Katz said the contract, in place since 2023, drew backlash from activists over Palantir’s ties to military and immigration enforcement work, though he maintained patient data had been protected throughout.
Based in Portland, MaineHealth said it will continue evaluating AI products as the technology evolves, with patient and caregiver needs guiding those decisions.
