Buffalo, N.Y.-based Erie County Medical Center Corp. has gone live on Epic, replacing multiple legacy EHRs with a single integrated platform.

The new EHR brings ECMC’s inpatient and outpatient records together and gives clinicians real-time access to patient information. ECMC said the Oct. 24 switch will improve communication between care teams, standardize documentation and reduce duplication. The hospital called it one of the most significant digital investments in its history.

ECMC worked with Epic for about two years on the transition, alongside Buffalo-based Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo, according to President and CEO Andrew Davis. ECMC’s internal IT team led the implementation.

“It is not an understatement to say how significantly transformational this process will be and how it will contribute to the long-term strength, vitality and viability of ECMC,” Mr. Davis said in an Oct. 28 news release.

CIO John Cumbo said the Epic system puts all patient information into a single, secure platform. He said the platform will give clinicians more access to that information and help them deliver care more efficiently.

Patients now have access to Epic’s MyChart portal. Through MyChart, they can view test results, schedule appointments, pay bills, request prescription refills and message care teams.

ECMC also expects the move to help with recruitment, because many physicians, nurses and clinicians train on Epic.

Mr. Davis credited New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration with supporting Epic implementations at ECMC, Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo.
