Cambridge, Mass.-based Beth Israel Lahey Health has formed the Center of Surgical and Medical Intelligence to develop and rigorously evaluate clinical AI, from the clinic to the operating room.
The center sits within the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Institute for Evidence, Innovation and Policy. Two Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center physicians will lead it: Adam Rodman, MD, a hospitalist in the division of general internal medicine, and Gabriel Brat, MD, a trauma surgeon and intensive care physician in the department of surgery. Researchers from BIDMC and Lahey Clinic will contribute.
The center will build unified data systems, generating insights across the patient journey and developing benchmarks and tools for collaboration with industry, academia and government. One major goal is to align AI efforts across the system.
Dr. Brat said in an Oct. 22 news release that the center will gather clinical data that is often discarded, adding that AI systems “are going to succeed or fail based on the quality of our data.”
The center will use the Smith Institute’s expertise in real-world evaluation of medical technology, clinical trials and health policy to produce evidence on AI’s safety, effectiveness and impact. Dr. Rodman, who recently published a pre-registered study of a patient-facing AI system in The Lancet, said AI has to be studied “with the rigor that medicine requires.”
Incoming CEO Peter Shorett, currently senior executive vice president and COO, said the system wants to use AI safely and responsibly while helping clinicians adopt new technology.
