AMA outlines 4 AI policy priorities

The American Medical Association urged lawmakers to prioritize physician oversight, data security and education, as AI tools become more embedded in clinical practice, according to a November statement submitted to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The AMA emphasized that physicians should be full partners throughout the AI lifecycle — from design to clinical deployment — to ensure tools meet standards of care and support the patient-physician relationship. The organization also called for a whole-of-government approach to regulation, warning that fragmented or duplicative rules could hinder adoption.

To build trust, the AMA said AI models must be trained on secure, unbiased data and be subject to strong privacy and consent safeguards. It also stressed the need for investments in medical education and ongoing training to support physicians’ understanding of AI.

These recommendations align with the October launch of the AMA Center for Digital Health and AI, which aims to help physicians integrate AI into care delivery through policy advocacy, clinical workflow design, education and cross-sector collaboration.
