Medicity provides technology that helps more than 700 hospitals and 125,000 physicians participate in the exchange of medical data. Aetna has entered into the acquisition agreement to leverage information technology as a way to help physicians and other providers control costs, said CFO Joseph Zubretsky.

The Medicity acquisition follows similar moves made in the healthcare industry by companies such as UnitedHealth, which in August agreed to acquire Axolotl, a San Jose, Calif.-based health information network company.
