Here are five findings from the study.
1. Now, 75 percent of hospitals have adopted at minimum a basic EHR.
2. Rural and small hospitals are chief amongst those organizations that have yet to adopt an EHR.
3. Among hospitals with EHRs, the ability to meet Stage 2 meaningful use requirements rose from 5.8 percent in 2013 to 40.5 percent of hospitals.
4. Key challenges most often reported by hospitals include:
• Up-front and ongoing costs
• Physician cooperation
• Meaningful use
5. The study authors concluded nationwide EHR adoption is possible, but more attention will be needed to address lack of adoption in small and rural hospitals.
