5 strategies to increase revenue and improve care delivery with an AI workforce

Healthcare workers often endure incredibly busy workdays, but technology solutions powered by artificial intelligence can help automate and optimize high-volume, repetitive workflows and give staff more time to focus on patient care.

During an Oct. 7 workshop hosted by Becker’s Hospital Review and sponsored by Olive, Sean Lane, Olive’s CEO and a former National Security Agency intelligence officer, discussed applications of AI in healthcare.

Here are five strategies covered by Mr. Lane:

1. Adopt an AI workforce. Healthcare leaders should establish an AI workforce that works alongside their human workforce–augmenting it by taking on robotic tasks and freeing up staff members to focus on improving patient care.

2. Identify where AI will have an impact. An AI workforce drives meaningful results across the enterprise – including in revenue cycle, IT, supply chain, pharmacy and more, however; Mr. Lane pointed out that, “you could build an AI workforce to go in and do something that is completely inconsequential” – which is why it is important to establish a process to scope, map and determine what opportunities will yield the greatest impact.

3. Use AI that gets smarter over time. Olive has built a network where machine learning happens continuously, so AI workers gain knowledge every day they are used. The more AI workers are integrated into hospitals, the more data they have to optimize workflows and identify opportunities for new work.

4. Track AI workers to evaluate their effectiveness. Every task an AI worker is trained to do has data associated with it. It’s important to measure these metrics to ensure the AI worker is delivering ROI.

5. Apply collective wisdom to AI workers. The AI workers designed by Olive can remember every button they’ve pushed, every claim they’ve processed, every insurer they’ve looked up and so forth, according to Mr. Lane. The network harnesses this data and applies collective wisdom, providing an opportunity for hospitals and health systems to operate at the industry best.
