12 Recently Announced HIEs

Health information exchanges are the next frontier for data sharing, allowing networks to share patient information stored on electronic health records.

Here are 12 HIEs that have been announced over the past three months.

1. St. Rita's Medical Center and Lima Memorial Health System, both in Lima, Ohio, started electronically sharing laboratory results.

2. Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola University Health System initiated an electronic exchange of health information for patients at Loyola University Medical Center and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, Ill., (part of Loyola's health system) with outside providers.

3. Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health plans to launch a fully integrated inter-network HIE this summer.

4. Two HIEs in Michigan, Michigan Health Connect and Great Lakes Health Information Exchange, joined forces to create Great Lakes Health Connect, sharing the health records of more than 5 million people.

5. The Medical Society of Northern Virginia formed HeaLixVA, a physician-led regional HIE with the ultimate goal of connecting all the healthcare delivery systems in the region.

6. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Health Information Exchange entered an agreement allowing physicians to access their patients' Medicaid clinical and claims information.

7. The MetroChicago Health Information Exchange is now connected to three more regional HIEs in downstate Illinois, Lincoln Land HIE, Illinois Health Exchange Partners and Central Illinois HIE. The new partnership covers data exchanges of 92 percent of the state's population.

8. Greater Houston Healthconnect and Integrated Care Collaboration of Austin (Texas) joined HIETexas, the statewide HIE.

9. New Jersey officially launched its first statewide HIE, New Jersey Health Information Network, connecting six regional exchanges: Jersey Health Connect, Health-e-cITi-NJ, Camden HIE, NJSHINE, Virtua and NJ-HITEC.

10. The HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a health information exchange that will cover a five-county area around Philadelphia, expects to officially launch in the third quarter of 2014.

11. Emory Healthcare and Grady Health System, both based in Atlanta, joined the Georgia Health Information Network, the first statewide HIE.

12. Providers in the Colorado Springs Military Health System joined the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization to better facilitate the exchange of patient information between military and civilian providers.
