Regional HIE to Launch in Northern Virginia

The Medical Society of Northern Virginia has announced the formation of a physician-led regional health information exchange.

The ultimate goal of HeaLixVA will be to connect all healthcare delivery systems in the region. "The goal is to get as many people who can generate data as possible," Jim Jenkins, MD, medical director for the Fairfax Family Practice Centers, told the Washington Business Journal. "From the patient's point of view, it reduces that feeling that no one knows what’s going on."

Subscribing providers will also be able to access monthly clinical analytics reporting, which will provide patients' longitudinal data and help quantify outcomes.

Physician practices, including Fairfax (Va.) Family Practice and Loudoun Medical Group in Leesburg, Va., and several laboratories will be the first to connect. Hospitals and health systems will be able to join in the second phase of the launch.
