Yale New Haven Health swings to operating gain through Q3

New Haven, Conn.-based Yale New Haven Health System reported operating income of $33 million (0.5% operating margin) through the third quarter of 2026, up from an operating loss of $40.2 million (-0.7% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Aug. 25 financial report. 

Four things to know: 

1. Total operating revenue rose to $6.1 billion for the nine months ended June 30, up from $5.7 billion during the same period last year. Patient service revenue totaled $5.1 billion, up from $4.8 billion, while other revenue climbed to $1 billion from $850.4 million.

2. Total operating expenses were $5.9 billion, up from $5.5 billion. Salaries and benefits totaled $2.8 billion, up from $2.7 billion. Supplies and other expenses were $3 billion, up from $2.7 billion.

3. Arnim Dontes began his role as Yale New Haven Health CFO on April 1. He previously served as deputy dean for finance and administration at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. The health system had been without a permanent CFO following a management shake-up in October. On Oct. 31, the system announced the departures of Bill Aseltyne, executive vice president and general counsel, Gail Kosyla, executive vice president and CFO, as well as two executives at Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital, COO Marc Kosak and CFO Bill Degnan. 

4. Yale New Haven Health reported a net income of $339.9 million through the third quarter of 2026, up from $141.6 million during the same period last year. Nonoperating gains nearly doubled to $306.9 million from $181.7 million, driven largely by income from investments, donations and other sources, which rose to $312.3 million from $167.2 million.
