The association of physicians and medical students called on Congress to pass legislation that will:
- Ensure patients are protected from massive bills after they unintentionally receive care from an out-of-network provider.
- Establish fair benchmark rates for payment to out-of-network providers that include actual local charges.
- Establish a fair and independent process to resolve payment disputes between health plans and out-of-network providers.
- Require insurers to provide patients with a large pool of physicians to choose from, including hospital-based emergency physicians and on-call surgeons and anesthesiologists.
