Walgreens lays off 646 workers

Walgreens is reducing its workforce in Florida and Connecticut by nearly 650 workers combined.

Walgreens is closing its distribution centers in Orlando, Fla., and Dayville, Conn. The Florida closure will result in layoffs of 324 workers, while the Connecticut closure will affect 322 employees. Layoffs are expected to occur on or by May 17.

"We expect these reductions in force to be permanent, and we will provide all affected employees with the opportunity to participate in on-site career fairs and/or outplacement services to assist with their transition to other employment," Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens noted in regulatory filings with state labor departments.

Walgreens announced plans to cut at least $1 billion in costs last fall, with a sizable portion of the reductions tied to Walgreens' VillageMD. The primary care subsidiary is exiting the Illinois and Florida markets, resulting in the closure of nearly 50 clinics.
