Brattleboro (Vt.) Memorial Hospital will lay off nine employees as part of its financial recovery plan and goal to strengthen the hospital’s long-term stability.

The workforce reduction comes after an evaluation of the hospital’s financial outlook, staffing levels and operational needs. It is only one part of a broader financial recovery plan aimed at restoring Brattleboro Memorial’s finances while maintaining essential healthcare services, according to a news release shared with Becker’s on Aug. 12.

“This is an extraordinarily difficult decision, and we recognize that behind every position is a person, a colleague and a family,” Elizabeth McLarney, MD, acting co-CEO of Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, said in the release. “These decisions were not made lightly, and they are not a reflection of the performance or dedication of the individuals whose positions are affected. They reflect the financial challenges facing BMH and the difficult steps necessary to build a more sustainable future for our hospital.”

Brattleboro Memorial will provide clear communication and transition resources to the affected employees, the release said.

In early July, the hospital’s board of directors approved a plan to close its obstetrics service line, including the BMH Birthing Center, over the next six to nine months. In December 2025, Brattleboro Memorial’s controller and CFO Laura Bruno exited her role after the hospital’s board shared in late November that its president and CEO Christopher Dougherty would not return from his leave of absence.

Dr. McLarney and Tony Blofson, MD, were named acting co-CEOs in October during Mr. Dougherty’s leave of absence.

Becker’s has followed up with Brattleboro Memorial Hospital regarding which roles are affected and will update this story should more information become available.
