Upstate Medical University plans new $140M facility

Syracuse, N.Y.-based UpstateMedicalUniversity is planning a $140 million expansion to “address a real need in our community,” John McCabe, MD, CEO of Upstate University Hospital, also in Syracuse, told NewsChannel 9.

Dr. McCabe said the new facility will help fill the gap between many emergency room visits and expensive hospital admissions. It will also provide more treatment for the underserved, such as Medicaid patients and the uninsured, who regularly seek care from UpstateMedicalUniversity’s ER.

“Even if it doesn’t take the pressure off, it will allow us to move folks out of the ED at the end of their visit into something, as opposed to just back into nothingness from which they end up coming back into the ER again,” said Dr. McCabe, according to the report.

The proposed center will likely be located across from the hospital’s main entrance.

The cost of the project will be covered by a state grant and debt payments by the hospital. If approved, construction will be completed in the next three to five years.
