Pittsburgh-based UPMC recorded an operating loss of $18.3 million (-0.2% operating margin) for the second quarter of 2026, down from operating income of $111.2 million (1.3% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Aug. 27 financial report.
Five things to know:
1. UPMC reported total operating revenue of $8.5 billion for the three months ended June 30, up 2.3% year over year. Insurance enrollment revenue rose 8.8% to $4.8 billion. Net patient service revenue was roughly flat, increasing 0.3% to $3.2 billion. Other revenue fell 28.5% to $504.2 million.
2. Total operating expenses were $8.5 billion, up 3.9% year over year. Salaries, professional fees and employee benefits increased 6.2% to $2.7 billion. Insurance claims expenses rose 1.1% to $3.2 billion. Supplies, purchased services and general expenses increased 5.5% to $2.4 billion.
3. For the six months ended June 30, UPMC reported an operating income of $242.5 million (1.4% margin), down from $348.6 million (2.1% margin) during the same period last year. UPMC’s health services division recorded a $204 million operating loss in the first half of 2026, down from operating income of $243 million during the same period last year, driven by lower inpatient volumes. Its insurance services division recorded operating income of $447 million, up from $106 million, aided by lower utilization across commercial, Medicare, Medicaid and Community HealthChoices product lines and rate increases for Medicaid, Community HealthChoices and CCBH product lines.
4. In May, UPMC signed a definitive agreement to acquire Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Health System from Chicago-based CommonSpirit. Trinity includes Trinity West and Trinity East in Steubenville, Ohio; Trinity St. Clairsville (Ohio) Neighborhood Hospital; and Trinity Twin City Medical Center in Dennison, Ohio, along with associated clinics. The deal is expected to close this fall, pending regulatory review and customary closing conditions.
5. UPMC reported net income of $358.9 million in the second quarter of 2026, down slightly from $363.9 million during the same period last year. For the first half of 2026, UPMC recorded net income of $441.9 million, down from $477 million during the same period last year.
