University of Pennsylvania Health System posts $438.6M surplus for FY 2014

Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System's revenue increased 12.5 percent to $3.9 billion in fiscal year 2014.

Although the health system's revenue significantly increased in 2014, its expenses rose at a lower rate. Expenses grew from $3.3 billion in FY 2013 to $3.6 billion in 2014. UPHS expense for employee benefits grew from approximately $1 billion to $1.2 billion from 2013 to 2014. However, some of the health system's other expenses were down, such as its malpractice insurance costs, which fell from $108 million in FY 2013 to $105.6 million this fiscal year.  

UPHS posted a $291.4 million operating surplus for FY 2014, up from a $185.1 million surplus the prior fiscal year. The system had a total surplus of $438.6 million after accounting for investment income.
