However, the health system posted a $639.6 million overall surplus for the year, due to a $259.6 million jump in investment income. CHI’s investment income rose from $488.8 million in 2013 to $748.4 million in 2014.

The health system spent $255.2 million on charity care in 2014, down from $320.7 million in 2013. According to the health system, the decline in charity care was due primarily to changes in payer mix as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
