A variety of factors, including long waits to see a physician, supported the proposal. The current emergency room is at University of Chicago Medical Center, but the university plans to construct a new emergency room closer to the Center for Care and Discovery, according to the report.

The number of beds would go from 36 to 42, and an additional entrance would be added, according to the report. Hospital officials said in the report that the project would mean increased efficiency, and less patients would leave the emergency room without treatment.

An application to build the new emergency room is pending with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, according to the report. The board is set to vote on the application in March.
