More than 40% of the nursing staff at Tower Health’s Pottstown (Pa.) Hospital is among those currently affected by the hospital’s recent workforce reduction, according to the union representing 200 nurses at the hospital.
Four things to know:
1. West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health announced July 28 it is eliminating 160 roles at Pottstown Hospital, including clinical and nonclinical roles.
2. The 160 job cuts are the second round of layoffs at Pottstown Hospital within the last seven months, according to a July 29 news release from the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals that was shared with Becker’s.
3. The reductions are part of changes at the hospital that include a multimillion-dollar investment to expand its emergency department, enhance behavioral health services, and update portions of the hospital while realigning services to better reflect current patient demand, a health system spokesperson said in a July 28 statement shared with Becker’s.
4. Once the behavioral health and emergency room renovations are complete, the system will add 38 new positions, bringing the net reduction to about 120, the Tower Health spokesperson said.
