West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health is eliminating 160 positions at its Pottstown (Pa.) Hospital, including clinical and nonclinical roles.
Four things to know:
1. The reductions are part of changes at the hospital that include a multimillion-dollar investment to expand its emergency department, enhance inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, and update portions of the hospital while realigning services to better reflect current patient demand, a health system spokesperson said in a July 28 statement shared with Becker’s.
2. Once the behavioral health and emergency room renovations are complete, the system will add 38 new positions, bringing the net reduction to about 120.
3. No clinical programs are ending as part of the announcement, and the only employees affected are at Pottstown Hospital.
“We recognize today’s announcement also includes difficult workforce decisions affecting valued members of our team,” the spokesperson said. “These decisions were not made lightly and are not a reflection of the dedication, compassion or professionalism of the individuals affected. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting impacted employees throughout this transition.”
4. The decisions are intended to preserve access to care. “These changes are designed to strengthen the hospital’s ability to serve local residents for generations to come by preserving access to the services patients need most, investing in the areas of greatest community need, and ensuring Pottstown Hospital remains a strong, sustainable community hospital for the future,” the spokesperson said.
