UHS' CEO-to-worker pay ratio over the past 5 years

CEOs for King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services were paid between 221 and 629 times more than the median annual salary for an employee at the health system between 2019 and 2023, according to proxy statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

UHS determines its median employee by using the greater of the total annual W-2 wages of employees both in the U.S. and the U.K. or calculated annualized pay for those who commenced work during the year or were on a leave of absence. The employee population consisted of full-time, part-time and temporary workers. 

Alan Miller served as CEO in 2019 and 2020. Marc Miller has served as CEO since 2021. 

Here is how the CEO-to-worker median pay ratio has changed the past five years: 

2019

Total CEO compensation: $24,473,240

Median employee compensation: $38,931

Ratio: 629 to 1 

2020

Total CEO compensation: $13,246,214

Median employee compensation: $43,337

Ratio: 305 to 1

2021

Total CEO compensation: $14,020,942  

Median employee compensation: $45,454

Ratio: 309 to 1

2022

Total CEO compensation: $10,919,976 

Median employee compensation: $49,369

Ratio: 221 to 1

2023

Total CEO compensation: $14,407,937

Median employee compensation: $50,152

Ratio: 287 to 1
