Trump signs law allowing states to defund abortion providers

President Donald Trump gave his stamp of approval on legislation allowing states to refuse federal family-planning funding for abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood, reports NPR.

The president signed the legislation Thursday, two weeks after it passed the Senate with a tie vote from Vice President Mike Pence. The legislation passed the House in February.

Under the law, states may deny Title X family-planning grants to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, according to the report. Former President Barack Obama's administration prohibited Title X grant recipients from excluding a subgrantee from participating "for reasons other than its ability to provide Title X services."

The new law essentially gives states control over family planning funds, which are meant to help fund organizations providing family planning services such as pregnancy care and fertility and cancer screenings, among other services, reports NPR.
