With a tie vote from Vice President Mike Pence, the U.S. Senate passed a measure Thursday that would allow states to strip family-planning monies for abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood, reports The Washington Post.
Here are four things to know.
1. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted against the measure with Democrats, according to the report. A vote from Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., who has been recovering from medical procedures, brought the vote to a tie. That led to Vice President Pence making the tiebreaking vote to pass the measure.
2. Under the measure, states could block Planned Parenthood and other clinics that provide abortions from receiving federal funding through the Title X family-planning program, according to the report.
3. No taxpayer money can be used for abortions. However, Republicans do not want taxpayer money to help fund abortion providers, the report states.
4. The legislation passed the House in February and is expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump, reports The Washington Post.
