Here are four things to know.
1. Texas is not one of the states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA. However, the state since 2011 has received an additional $6.2 billion in annual federal Medicaid funding via a waiver, according to the report. That’s more than 33 percent of the federal government’s current annual Medicaid funding contribution to Texas.
2. The money is used to care for people without insurance coverage and “to test regional programs to improve care and access,” the report states.
3. Texas’ $6.2 billion Medicaid deal expires in December. The state hopes to extend that agreement 21 months.
4. Hospitals in the state claim the money from the waiver is needed to cover rising uncompensated care costs and keep programs and services for the poor in place, according to the report.
