Earlier this week the federal government said they would stop funding some of Texas’ costs for uncompensated care to uninsured patients should Texas decide not to expand its Medicaid program.
In a letter dated April 7, Texas health officials asked the federal government to continue funding Texas hospitals for uncompensated care costs for one year and to provide an unspecified amount for an additional three months.
If Texas’ emergency waiver is approved, the funding would extend the life of a program safety-net hospitals have largely relied on to serve uninsured patients for the past five years, according to The Texas Tribune.
