The goal of the accountable care network is to offer affordable health coverage for large employers. “The status quo in healthcare is not sustainable, especially for the employer community, which provides 44 percent of all the health insurance coverage in the United States,” Joe Gifford, MD, chief of strategic innovation for the affiliation, said in a news release.

In preparation to offer the new model of care in 2014, the affiliation has three main focuses this year. According to the release, these focuses are:

•    Developing a physician-led structure
•    Exploring partnerships with other physician groups
•    Assembling an IT infrastructure and analytics and data management systems

Providence and Swedish affiliated in February 2012 and have been working to align administrative departments and IT systems and lower the total cost of healthcare.
