As the ICD-10 landscape changes, it is necessary for healthcare providers to adopt best practices to manage the thousands of new codes to be added to the coding system for fiscal year 2017.
Crystal Ewing, manager of data at health IT company ZirMed: With the ICD-10 code freeze ending earlier this month, it not only is important to ensure EMR, HIS and billing systems are updated with the new additions (they may appear automatically as part of normal system updates), but also to update any proprietary forms such as intake forms and superbills with the new codes. Other areas that should be reviewed include deleted codes, which need to be removed from proprietary forms as applicable, and revised codes for new code descriptions (whose intent may have changed) to ensure proper code usage.
