RCM tip of the day: Train registrars on insurance billing details

Training hospital registrars on insurance requirements can improve billing and collections as well as increase patient satisfaction, advises Rebecca Farrington, chief revenue officer at Healthcare Administrative Partners.

"On a practical level, there will be fewer claims denials when the most accurate information is collected up front," she told Becker's Hospital Review. "Less tangible will be the patient satisfaction that results when the hospital takes a more global interest in the patient's financial well-being. A full explanation of what they can expect in terms of insurance coverage for both the hospital and the physician bills will be a breath of fresh air."

She recommended collaboration with physician groups to create registrar best practices.

"It's a win-win because both the hospital and the physicians will do better in their billing and collections when a better job is done up front," said Ms. Farrington.
