Proposed bill would cover chronic care costs for some HDHP policyholders

A bill introduced in the House last week would allow health plans to cover chronic care management costs for members with high-deductibles and health savings accounts who have yet to meet their deductible.

Currently, health plans can only cover certain preventive services, like immunizations, without cost sharing before a deductible is met. The proposed legislation would add services for managing chronic illnesses, such as asthma and diabetes, to that list.

House Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) introduced the legislation.

“We are constantly looking for innovative policy solutions to lower the cost of healthcare without compromising its quality, and this legislation does just that,” Ms. Black said in a prepared statement.
