ProMedica to lay off 26

Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica plans to lay off 26 skilled nursing support staff, effective June 17, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed April 18.

Twenty of the affected employees work remotely across the U.S, and six work at the ProMedica Summit Center in Toledo, according to the WARN notice. Most of the positions support sales, marketing and administrative functions for the skilled nursing facilities, Promecia told Becker's.

"ProMedica employment services believes that the new operators will hire some of the employees listed in this notice, but their hiring needs are still developing at the time of this notice," Gary Cates, chief government relations officer, said in the filing. "All impacted employees have been notified of their layoff dates and have been notified that ProMedica employment services expects the layoffs to be permanent."

The news comes three months after the health system announced plans to layoff 262 employees tied to its exit from a skilled-nursing facility joint venture with Welltower, a real estate investment trust that invests in healthcare infrastructure.

In February, ProMedica agreed a $710 million deal to sell its hospice and home-care business to Gentiva, a hospice company backed by Humana and private equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice. The transaction, expected to close this quarter, will add more than 120 locations to Gentiva, which currently has about 380 locations nationwide and is the largest U.S. hospice company by revenue.

"ProMedica proactively provided Toledo and Ohio officials with a second notice of position eliminations related to the previously announced divestiture of its skilled nursing facilities nationwide. The staffing adjustment is necessary as the organization finalizes the transfer of the facilities to new operators," the health system said in a statement provided to Becker's. "ProMedica is committed to assisting the affected employees through their transition. Our human resources department is working closely with them to provide support during this process."
