Partners CEO: Healthcare costs are ‘relatively affordable’ in Massachusetts

Healthcare in Massachusetts is cheaper than in many other states when the costs are adjusted for incomes, David Torchiana, MD, president and CEO of Boston-based Partners HealthCare, recently told The Boston Globe.

Healthcare costs in Massachusetts are often cited as some of the highest in the nation. However, when adjusted for the relatively high family incomes in Massachusetts, Dr. Torchiana said healthcare costs are affordable.

“Although healthcare costs are a big challenge for everybody, I think that Massachusetts has a pretty good healthcare system at a relatively affordable cost,” he told The Boston Globe.

Dr. Torchiana’s remarks come as a state commission is studying price variation at Massachusetts hospitals. After a several month-long investigation, the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association issued a report in October that acknowledged the problem of “unwarranted price variation among providers” in the commonwealth.
