Oregon hospitals roll out new charity care policies

The Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems has announced several new initiatives that will help ensure residents without insurance receive the hospital care they need.

Under the new policy, free care will be provided to an estimated 87,000 Oregonians who are not eligible for Medicaid and whose income is below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Oregon hospitals have also committed to maintain their 2015 community benefit spending based on an average of prior years to keep charity care numbers from dropping.

"Oregon's hospitals are leading the way by enacting a set of initiatives voluntarily that seek to close the coverage gap for the shrinking percentage of uninsured and under insured, while maintaining their significant investments in their communities and the people they serve 24/7/365," said Andy Davidson, president and CEO of OAHHS.
