CMS has announced that Massachusetts will be the first state to partner with it to test new models for providing care to dual eligibles, or individuals enrolled in both the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Under the Financial Alignment Demonstration, CMS and the state will contract with integrated care organizations using a capitated model to coordinate the delivery of care for these individuals.

CMS announced the demonstration last July. It plans to test the effectiveness of both capitated and managed fee-for-service models for dual eligibles, a group whose care exceeds $300 billion annually across both Medicare and Medicaid.
