Other findings were:
- Not-for-profit hospitals had better financial returns than for-profits.
- Charity care rose 23 percent even before the recession, in 2001-2007.
- The seven largest health systems control more than one-third of hospitals and licensed beds in the state.
- Californians age 80 and older accounted for 414 discharges per 1,000 people, compared with 91 for those ages 50 to 59.
- More than 200 hospitals must replace one or more buildings by 2013 to withstand earthquakes.
