New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health is eliminating a limited number of positions, marking the health system’s third round of layoffs in less than a year.
“Like many hospitals and health systems across the country, we regularly assess our operations to stay strong and responsive to the evolving needs of our patients and communities,” a spokesperson for Northwell said in an Oct. 5 statement shared with Becker’s. “As we navigate today’s challenging healthcare landscape, we’ve taken the necessary steps to maintain the stability of the organization and mitigate financial pressures while also ensuring we preserve vital services in the communities we serve.”
The health system said the latest workforce cuts are part of that broader effort.
“We made the difficult decision to eliminate a limited number of positions in the organization,” Northwell said. “Decisions like this are never taken lightly, and our priority in this situation is supporting the team members affected, and where possible, matching them to other open positions within Northwell that we must fill.”
Northwell did not respond to Becker’s request for details on the number of employees affected or the types of roles eliminated in the latest round.
The reductions follow two other rounds of layoffs announced within the past year.
In February, Northwell said it was reducing its IT workforce by less than 4%. Those cuts represented fewer than 0.1% of the system’s overall workforce, according to a spokesperson. Northwell did not disclose the exact number of employees affected or which IT roles were eliminated.
Northwell said the IT job cuts were part of broader efforts to manage resources amid economic and policy pressures while continuing to invest in strategic growth areas.
In November 2025, Northwell also eliminated a limited number of positions across the system as part of efforts to reduce spending and pace certain investments. A spokesperson said at the time that the cuts affected “well under 1%” of the health system’s workforce and that Northwell would seek to move affected employees into open positions where possible.
“We continue to create jobs as we modernize our facilities and strengthen care across the region,” the health system said in a statement.
Northwell merged with Danbury, Conn.-based Nuvance Health in May 2025, creating an integrated regional health system that spans from New York City to western Connecticut. The combined organization includes 28 hospitals, 104,000 employees and more than 1,000 outpatient facilities, according to its website.
