Secaucus, N.J.-based Hudson Regional Health plans to close the emergency department at a shuttered hospital site in Jersey City, N.J., on March 14 unless alternative funding is secured for the facility, which is projected to see a $30 million loss this year.
Seven things to know:
1. Hudson Regional initially planned to suspend operations at the University Hospital Emergency Department on Feb. 28, but has extended the closure date through March 14 at 7:30 p.m., according to a Feb. 27 news release shared with Becker’s.
2. The extension comes after requests from Jersey City elected officials and discussions with the New Jersey Department of Health’s commissioner, according to the report. Hudson Regional’s chairman, Yan Moshe, agreed to pay for the costs associated with emergency department operations for the next two weeks, totaling approximately $1 million.
3. Heights University Hospital closed in November, but Hudson Regional said at the time of the closure that the facility’s 24/7 emergency department would remain open for now. Despite downsizing to primarily emergency department services, however, the facility is still expected to lose more than $30 million this year, following a $74 million loss between November 2024 and November 2025. Hudson Regional said the financial strain threatens services across its network.
4. Anticipating the suspension of services on March 14, Hudson Regional said it has committed to relocate existing healthcare workers who wish to be placed within the system. It will also place an ambulance outside the emergency department for two weeks and deploy a mobile health unit following that period to provide various levels of care.
5. A hospital union, Health Professionals and Allied Employees, said it is calling on state officials and regulators to hold Hudson Regional accountable and demand full transparency and a thorough public review before any major changes are implemented, NJ.com reported Feb. 26.
6. Hudson Regional Health formed in May 2025 as part of the final step of Jersey City-based CarePoint Health’s bankruptcy exit.
7. Despite plans to close the emergency department, Hudson Regional said it has communicated with Jersey City officials that it wants to pursue redevelopment opportunities in the coming months that would support the construction of a new, financially sustainable hospital. The system said a new state-of-the-art facility would allow it to recruit new physicians, expand service lines needed to generate revenue and provide the highest standards of care.
