New Jersey state Sens. Raj Mukherji and Brian Stack have shared plans to sponsor a $25 million supplemental appropriation to help combat the financial struggles that Jersey City, N.J.-based Hudson Regional Health’s Heights University Hospital, also in Jersey City, is facing.
“These losses aren’t sustainable,” Mr. Mukherji said in a Sept. 29 Instagram reel. “We need a lifeline to keep this hospital open and emergency services in the Heights.”
In late September, Hudson Regional shared that it would suspend non-essential services at Heights University, formerly known as Christ Hospital, unless the state and other government entities could provide “substantial financial support” for the facility.
Despite $300 million in investments over 10 months, with much of the funding directed toward Heights University, Hudson Regional Health president and CEO Nizar Kifaieh, MD, said the hospital remains in financial distress and faces more than $60 million in annual losses without public support.
“We are optimistic this $25 million investment will be part of a full government injection needed to stabilize the hospital, support our healthcare workers and reinvest in critical service lines,” Dr. Kifaieh said in an Oct. 1 statement shared with Becker’s. “We strongly urge the governor and legislature to adopt this resolution to help us keep the Heights hospital open.”
