The Listening to Women and Pregnant and Pregnant and Postpartum People initiative will use phones and texting to improve screening, referral and care coordination throughout pregnancy and the postpartum year, according to a Sept. 15 news release from the university.

Suicide and drug overdose are the leading causes of pregancy-associated deaths in the postpartum year, as partner violence and perinatal mood, anxiety and substance abuse disorders are rarely identified, the release said. The initiative aims to improve patient-provider communication with technology, making it easier for women to ask for help.

The $7 million research funding grant was awarded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, according to the release.
