Maine looks to raise stakes for states that shirk price transparency rule

The Maine House of Representatives has passed a bill that looks to tighten medical debt collections on hospitals that do not comply with federal price transparency requirements, The Maine Wire reported June 13.

The legislation would prevent hospitals from collecting on a patient’s unpaid bills if they are not in compliance with the price transparency law, according to the report.

Other states, such as Colorado, have passed similar laws.

The bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration, the report said.
