Louisiana’s Medicaid expansion plan will save $677M over the next 5 years

Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals has predicted the state could save as much as $677 million over the next 5 years and more than $1 billion over the next 10 years, according to The Times-Picayune.

The estimate, which was presented before state Senate Health and Welfare Committee members April 18, comes after Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) made the decision earlier this year to expand Medicaid in the state.

“I believe folks in the prior administration who said we couldn’t afford Medicaid expansion, they took the worst case scenario on every variable,” Gov. Edwards said, according to the report. “If you look at what we’re doing in light of experience in other states … we know we’re going to save money.”
