Jefferson's neuroscience institute gets boost with $20M donation

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health has received a $20 million gift from Vickie and Jack Farber to strengthen the neuroscience institute that is named for them.

The gift, which brings the Farbers' total philanthropy to Jefferson to $35 million, will help expand clinical and research programs in Jefferson's Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience, according to a news release.

Specifically, the gift will support the Farber Institute's work as part of Jefferson's first Clinical and Research Integrated Strategic Program, an approach to organizing healthcare based on disease focus, rather than by departments or specialties, Jefferson said.

The Farbers' gift will also provide infrastructure and monies to the Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center, which combines basic and clinical research with personalized care for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The Farbers have been touched personally by neurodegenerative diseases: Mrs. Farber lost her father to ALS and her mother to Alzheimer's disease.

The gift will also support an expansion of the Farber Institute's neurovascular program. Jefferson said this will allow for the development of therapeutic strategies for conditions such as intracranial vascular malformation, intracranial tumor, stroke and intracranial stenosis.
